AKRON, Ohio -- MaryKate Mellen placed fifth in the 1500 meter finals Saturday to highlight the final day for the Ball State track & field team at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships.
Mellen, a senior, clocked a time of 4:28.77 to earn four points for Ball State. As a team, the Cardinals concluded the three-day meet at Akron's Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex in 12th place.
Kent State claimed the team championship with a total of 169 points, followed by Akron in second at 119 and Buffalo in third at 109.50.
Ball State had three athletes competing in field events Saturday, led by Haley Austin and her 10th place finish in the high jump (1.65m). Michaela Hull placed 12th in the discus (43.14m), and Alyssa Hurlburt finished 15th in the triple jump (9.88m).
The Cardinals had two relay teams in action on the final day. The 4x100 team of Katie Behrendt, Christina Crawford, Becca Kropf and Jordan McMillan placed 10th (48.46), while the 4x400 team of Behrendt, Kropf, Danielle Dahl and Janae Taylor finished 12th (3:58.40).
Courtney Edon was also in action Saturday, placing 20th in the 5000 meters (18:39.98).
Following Kent State, Akron and Buffalo on the team leaderboard, Miami University (105 points), Eastern Michigan (82.50), Western Michigan (72), Toledo (49), Central Michigan (41.50), Ohio (33.50), Bowling Green (23), Northern Illinois (11) and Ball State (4) rounded out the field.
