AKRON, Ohio - - Senior distance runner MaryKate Mellen qualified for the finals in the 1500m run to lead the Ball State track & field team on the second day of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships at Akron’s Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex.
With wet weather hampering the day, the Cardinals fell to 12th among the 12-team field at the conclusion of day two’s events. Through eight events, Buffalo leads the meet with 53.50 points, followed by Kent State (50), Akron (44), Miami (27), Eastern Michigan (24.50), Central Michigan (23), Toledo (17), Bowling Green (12), Western Michigan (11), Ohio (9), Northern Illinois (2) and Ball State (0).
In posting a time of 4:34.40 in the prelims of the 1500m run, Mellen earned the sixth seed in tomorrow’s championship heat which is slated to start at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
In her final career individual event, senior Janae Taylor posted a season-best time of 12:04 to place 14th in the 100m run, just outside of the top 12 which advanced to the finals. Taylor is slated to run in tomorrow's 4x400m relay.
Action in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude tomorrow, with five individuals and a pair of relays set to compete for the Cardinals. Michaela Hull will open the day for Ball State with a 12:05 p.m. start in the discus.
