NASHPORT, Ohio -- The Ball State men's golf team sits in a tie for second place after 36 holes at the Mid-American Conference Championship.

The Cardinals posted rounds of 296 and 305 on day one of the event Friday at Longaberger Golf Club. Their two-round total of 601 (+25) is tied with Toledo, 10 shots behind tournament leader Kent State.

Tyler Merkel leads Ball State individually in third place at 2-over par 146 (70-76). He posted the low round of the day for the Cardinals with a 70 in the morning round and held a share of the lead after 18 holes.

Kent State's Taylor Pendrith is the only player in the field in red figures and leads the way at 6-under. Toledo's Mike Lancaster is second at 1-over.

Tony Lazzara helped keep Ball State in position during a tough second round. He carded a 73 to lead the Cardinals in the afternoon and sits in a tie for 12th at 6-over 150 (77-73) through 36 holes.

Lazzara bounced back from a double bogey at the ninth hole with an eagle at the par-5 10th and then responded to another double bogey on the back nine with birdies on two of his final three holes.

Alex Stinson, playing one group behind Lazzara, also eagled the 10th hole in his second round. Stinson finished his day at 9-over 153 (75-78) and is tied for 16th.

Brodie Williams, who had an eagle at the par-5 seventh hole in the first round, is one stroke back of Stinson in a tie for 20th at 10-over 154 (76-78). Williams played his first five holes of the day at 5-over par but then played the final 13 holes of his opening round at 1-under.

Joe Gasser is one shot behind Williams to round out the Ball State lineup in a tie for 23rd at 11-over 155 (75-80). Gasser had a tough start to his second round at 7-over through five holes but came back to play the final 13 holes at just 1-over.

The third round will be played Saturday and the final round Sunday on the par-72, 7,243-yard layout at Longaberger. Ball State will be playing Saturday with Kent State and Toledo in the final groups, the first of which goes off at 9:30 a.m.
