Men's Tennis Ends Season With Loss at MAC Tourney
DEKALB, Ill. - The No. 1 Ball State men's tennis team (16-7) lost 4-2 to No. 4 Northern Illinois Friday afternoon at the Huskie Tennis Courts in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals.
The Huskies took the early 1-0 edge over the Cardinals after winning the doubles point. On court one doubles, Frederic Cadieux and Max Phillips took down Ray Leonard and Patrick Elliott by a score of 8-6. Dor Amir and Simon Formont defeated Ball State's No. 3 twosome of Imanol Arconada and Alex Brym, 9-8 (7-4). The lone doubles tandem to win for the Cardinals was at No. 2 doubles, when Dalton Albertin and Cliff Morrison took the 8-3 match from Axel Lagerlof and Jovan Zeljkovic.
Northern Illinois won on courts one, two and three to take the match from Ball State. Two Cardinals ended the season with singles victories, Arconada and Elliott each pulled off straight set wins in their respective positions.
The Cardinals were crowned MAC regular season champions after their 4-3 victory last Saturday at Buffalo.
The MAC regular season crown was the first for the Cardinals since the 2006 season. Ball State has now won 21 MAC titles in program history, including 17 undefeated MAC seasons. Ball State has participated in the MAC for the last 33 years, claiming 37 regular season and/ or tournament championships. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won the league tournament six times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2011).
