Ball State's baseball team tallied a 5-3 win over the nation's 19th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind., Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, the Cardinals improved to 16-17 overall, while the Hoosiers fell to 26-8.

Ball State rallied for three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead in the game.  Elbert Devarie reached on a fielder's choice to score Kevin Schlotter, who reached on a single to start the inning.  Sean Godfrey's sacrifice fly scored Devarie and an ensuing error on the play plated Wes Winkle, who had singled.

Indiana responded with one run in the third to close the gap to 3-1, but Ball State added a fourth run in the fourth when Sam Tidaback's double scored Schlotter.

The Hoosiers closed the game to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth, and a three hour lightning and rain delay slowed the game in the eighth.

But, Ball State responded when the game resumed with an insurance run in the top of the ninth to seal the 5-3 win.  The Cardinals final run was a result of a Devarie double, followed by a pair of sacrifice bunts from Winkle and Blake Beemer.

Clay Manering started the game on the mound for Ball State and pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four batters to even his record at 2-2 on the season.  Tyler Jordan came on in relief and pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.

Devarie was 1-for-4 on the day with one run-batted-in and two runs scored.  Godfrey was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Tidaback was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Ball State will return to Mid-American Conference action with a three-game series at Miami University Friday through Sunday in Oxford, Ohio.  Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
