SCOUTING BALL STATE: The Cardinals are 14-15 overall and 4-5 in the Mid-American Conference after suffering a 7-5 loss to Bowling Green in Muncie, Ind., in a non-conference game Tuesday . . . After travelling to Purdue for a Wednesday non-conference tilt, the Cardinals will host MAC foe Central Michigan Friday through Sunday at Ball Diamond.
SCOUTING PURDUE: The Boilermakers are 11-19 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten Conference after losing a 10-5 game at Indiana State Tuesday . . . Purdue lost two of three contests at home to league opponent Northwestern last weekend.
THE SERIES: The Cardinals have played Purdue in baseball 83 times with the Boilermakers holding a 47-34-2 all-time edge in the series.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Scott Baker ranks third in the nation in victories with seven . . . There are two pitchers from across the nation who lead with eight wins apiece . . . Baker and Chris Marangon are tied for 17th nationally in games started with eight apiece . . . Baker is 85th in the nation with 48 strikeouts . . . MALONEY MILESTONES: Rich Maloney, who tallied his 600th career victory in Ball State's win at Lipscomb Feb. 23, tallied his 300th career conference victory April 6 at his alma mater, Western Michigan . . . Maloney served as Ball State's head coach from 1996-2002 and Michigan's head mentor from 2003-12 before returning to the Cardinals . . . He owns a 301-171 career record in conference games between the Big Ten Conference and Mid-American Conference . . . In addition, Maloney owns a 145-65 record in MAC games and needs five wins to reach the 150 win mark in MAC contests.
WINNING WAYS: Ball State is 10-4 when leading after six innings, 11-3 when in the lead after seven and 12-0 when leading after eight frames . . . The Cardinals are 10-6 when scoring first in a game this year.
BAKER EARNS SEVENTH WIN OF SEASON: Scott Baker tallied his seventh victory of the season in Ball State's win at Western Michigan (4/6) . . . He pitched a complete game for the win to improve to 7-0 on the season . . . Baker allowed only two earned runs on nine hits and struck out four to get the victory . . . He owns a 2.06 ERA on the season . . . Baker's second victory of the year was at Lipscomb, which was the 600th career win for head coach Rich Maloney . . . His win at Western Michigan (4/6) marked the 300th conference win in Maloney's career . . . Baker has struck out 48 batters in 52.1 innings pitched and allowed only 12 earned runs.
BEEMER IS A SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE: Blake Beemer, a senior outfielder/first baseman, is one of 30 candidates for collegiate baseball's Senior CLASS Award . . . Beemer is a candidate because of his notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition . . . He is in his third season as a team captain for the Cardinals . . . Beemer is batting .259 with 16 runs-batted-in and five doubles this season . . . He has eight multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games this season.
KEVIN SCHLOTTER MAKING A MARK: Kevin Schlotter, a junior who had played in only 15 games in his career prior to 2013, has played in 22 games and started 13 for the Cardinals this season . . . He owns a .304 batting average in 56 at-bats. . . . Schlotter has nine runs-batted-in, 20 total bases and four runs scored on the season . . . He led Ball State with a .417 batting average in the team's seven spring trip games . . . He has five multi-hit games and two multi-RBI contests this year.
GODFREY AT A GOOD PACE: Sean Godfrey, a junior outfielder who hit his fourth home run of the season vs. Bowling Green (4/9), is batting .325 on the season with a team high .517 slugging percentage . . . He is third on the team with seven doubles and is tied for the team lead with two triples . . . Godfrey has a team-high four HRs this season . . . Godfrey has a team-best 12 multi-hit games in 2013 plus has four multi-RBI contests . . . He managed a .412 (7-for-17) batting average in Ball State's four games last week and was 3-for-5 with a HR vs. Bowling Green Tuesday.
BILLY WELLMAN FINDING HIS WAY: Billy Wellman, a junior infielder, is batting .320 through 29 games and leads the Cardinals with 22 runs-batted-in . . . He has a team-best seven multi-RBI games and 10 multi-hit games . . . Wellman is tied for first on the team with nine doubles plus has one home run and a .437 slugging percentage on the season.
T.J. WEIR HITTING AND PITCHING: T.J. Weir is batting .288 on the season and earned his first pitching win of the season in Ball State's 4-3 victory over IPFW (3/16) . . . He pitched the final two thirds of the ninth, allowing no hits, to close out the one-run win for the Cardinals . . . Weir recorded his first save of the year vs. Bradley (2/22) when he pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing no runs, and striking out two . . . Weir is second on the team with 46 total bases . . . He has seven multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games in 2013 . . . Weir started Tuesday's game and pitched four innings of no-hit baseball before leaving the game as the pitcher . . . Weir also played third base and shortstop plus served as the team's designated hitter in Tuesday's contest . . . Weir is in the midst of a six game hitting streak.
CODY CAMPBELL NEAR THE TOP: Cody Campbell owns a .305 batting average through 29 games this season . . . He is second on the team with 21 runs-batted-in and fifth for Ball State with 40 total bases . . . Campbell is tied for the team lead with nine doubles plus has one triple in 2013 . . . He has eight multi-hit games and six mutli-RBI contests in 2013.
PITCHING PERFORMANCES: Jon Cisna earned his second win of the year and evened his mark at 2-2 with a victory at Western Michigan (4/7) . . . He pitched 8.1 innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out four . . . Chris Marangon, a senior right handed pitcher, got his first win of the season vs. Bradley (Feb. 22) in Nashville, Tenn. . . . He pitched six innings, allowing four runs and striking out two . . . Marangon is 1-1 with a 2.42 earned-run average in eight starts this season . . . Matt Johnsen has a 1-0 record with a 2.08 ERA in 10 appearances . . . He has pitched 17.1 innings with 12 strikeouts on the season.
