MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team posted an impressive 1-0 victory Saturday over the Haiti Women’s National Team at the Briner Sports Complex.

The game, part of Ball State’s spring schedule, was scoreless until the 64th minute of action when Maimee Morris tallied the only goal on a free kick from 35 yards out.

That goal lifted the Cardinals to victory over a Haiti team that entered the game at No. 58 in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women's World Rankings.

“It was a great day to have a team of that caliber here,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “We are delighted with the result. I thought our girls battled very well in every aspect and stuck to the gameplan. We were always going to be at a disadvantage in terms of size and experience, but the girls met the challenge, and that’s what we are really excited about.”

The offensive chances increased for both teams in the second half after a scoreless first half that produced only eight combined shots. Ball State managed to get 12 shots off in the second half, while Haiti had 11.

Haiti had the first good look at a goal 15 minutes into the second half when Roselord Borgella fired a shot that went off the crossbar after being tipped by Ball State goalkeeper Layne Schramm. Roselord led the Haiti offensive attack with four shots, all of which came in the second half.

Schramm played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves to earn the shutout for Ball State. Morris led the Cardinals’ attack with four shots, while Becca Sutton and Madison Oyer added three each.

The Morris goal was set up by a foul on the left side of the field and 35 yards out. Morris lined up a free kick and sent in arcing over the outstretched hand of Haiti goalkeeper Geralda Saintilus and into the right corner of the net.

“It was a well struck ball,” Roberts said. “Maimee does that pretty consistently, both in practices and in games. I was glad to see her get the goal. She was delighted to score against a national team, and her goal was the difference.”

Ball State managed to hold on to the 1-0 lead for the final 25 minutes. With the win, the Cardinals remained unbeaten at 3-0-2 for their spring season.

The team will wrap up its spring slate over the next two weeks. Here is a look at what remains on the Cardinals’ schedule:
