OXFORD, Ohio - - The Ball State outdoor track & field team scored five top 10 efforts on the opening day of the Miami Invitational at the George L. Rider Track in Oxford, Ohio.
The host Miami RedHawks have the early lead among the five scored teams after two events with 37 total points. Dayton is second with 11 points followed by Findlay (11 pts), Eastern Illinois (9 pts) and Ball State (8 pts).
The Cardinals started the meet by scoring five points in the hammer throw. Junior transfer Erin Walker picked up three of the points after placing fifth in the event with a career-best throw of 47.61m/156-02. The other two points came from Marie Lumpkin who placed seventh with a season-best effort of 46.80m/153-06.
Ball State’s other three points on the day came in the 10,000m run when senior Allison Blanck placed sixth with a career-best time of 38:36.79.
In the first session of the 5,000m run, senior MaryKate Mellen crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 17:37.53, while sophomore Courtney Edon added a career-best effort of 17:43.96 to place fifth.
Action in the 2013 Miami Invitational picks up again Saturday morning with the women’s discus starting at 10 a.m. and the second session of the women’s 5,000m run beginning at 11:15 a.m.
