MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball state field hockey head coach Beth Maddox announced the 2013 schedule set to begin in Muncie with a scrimmage against Iowa on Thursday, Aug. 22.
The 18-game regular season campaign will feature five teams that were ranked last season in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, including two that were included in the final poll: Northwestern (No. 10 in final poll) and Michigan (No. 9 in final poll). Iowa, who Ball State will scrimmage with, was ranked No. 14 in the final poll.
“[Assistant coach Gretchen Lulow] and I are very excited about our 2013 schedule,” said Maddox. “We feel that our team will be ready to handle the competition. We worked very hard to make sure that our schedule would enable us to compete against top teams and still accomplish our goal of going to the MAC Tournament. We are excited to welcome the newest member of our field hockey team – our new field. We are ready for the season and cannot wait to show everyone what we can do.”
The regular season will open up with the Cardinals traveling to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on James Madison and Appalachian State on Sep. 1 and Sep. 2.
The Cardinals will then come back to Muncie for a three-game home stand hosting Robert Morris (Sep. 6), Colgate (Sep. 8) and Northwestern (Sep. 10). Colgate and Robert Morris will face off in a game on Sep. 7.
Ball State will then travel to Lindenwood on Sep. 21, a team that the Cardinals defeated 8-2 in the 2012 season. BSU will wrap up that road trip with a game at St. Louis on Sep. 22.
Ball State will then come home to take on UC-Davis (Sep. 25) and Vermont (Sep. 28). UC-Davis and Central Michigan will face off on the BSU Turf Field on Sep. 27 and Vermont and UC-Davis will play on Sep. 29.
The Cardinals will open up MAC play with a game at Central Michigan on Oct. 5 followed up by a matchup with Michigan on Oct. 6.
The following weekend, Ball State will take on Miami on Oct. 11 and Michigan State Oct. 13.
The team will return to Muncie to take on Kent on Oct. 19 before hosting Ohio State in a midweek battle on Oct. 23.
The Cardinals will face the Bobcats from Ohio University on Oct. 26 before traveling to take on Indiana on Oct. 27. Last season, the Cardinals handed Indiana a loss in a thrilling 3-2 win in overtime at the BSU Turf Field. Ball State will wrap up the season at Missouri State on Nov. 2.
Ball State ended the 2012 season with a 4-14 mark. The team will return a majority of its team and will add a talented incoming class.
“We will have a team comprised of 10 freshmen and 10 returners, so the energy and excitement should be a lot of fun for fans to watch,” said Maddox. “We are confident in the leadership our four juniors will bring combined with the experience of our six sophomores were able to get last season.”
