MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team travels to Eastern Michigan's Bob Parks Track inside Bowan Field House this weekend for the 2013 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The two-day event kicks off Friday at 10:30 a.m. with action in the women's pentathlon. The top eight performers in each event will score based on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.
Last season, the Cardinals placed 12th among the 12 teams at the championship meet with 10 total points.
With a new qualifying format this season, the Cardinals will send 13 individuals, as well as a pair of relay teams, to this season's meet.
Unlike previous years, automatic qualifying standards were in place for this season's meet with events capped at 20 participants. If 20 student-athletes did not post automatic marks in an event, entrants were selected going down the conference's performance list.
Based on 2013 seedings, senior distance runner MaryKate Mellen is poised to score in the mile run as she owns the sixth-best individual time in the league at 4:54.50. Mellen is also seeded 10th in the 3,000m run (9:54.44).
Sophomore Haley Austin also enters the meet in prime position to score, ranking ninth in the conference in the high jump at 1.68m.
