MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to I-69 rival IPFW (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21) Wednesday afternoon at Worthen Arena. Greg Herceg and Matt Sutherland led the offensive with double-digit kills, while Kevin Owens and Tommy Rouse headed up the defense.
With the loss, Ball State falls to 8-2 on the season and 3-2 in MIVA play. IPFW improves to 4-4 on the year and 2-1 in league play.
Herceg notched 11 kills, his seventh match of the season in double digits. Sutherland tallied a career-high 10 kills to go with a .250 hitting percentage (10-3-28). The sophomore notched his first-career double-double after getting under a career-high 11 digs. Middle attackers Owens and Matt Leske connected on eight kills each.
Rouse got under a career-high tying 18 digs, many of which saved the point for Ball State. Owens was credited with seven assisted blocks. Dan Wichmann had 42 assists to go with seven digs and four assisted blocks.
The Mastodons outhit the Cardinals .204 (55-25-147) to .133 (46-28-135). IPFW also held the advantage in total blocks 13.5-11.5. Ball State got under 55 digs to IPFW’s 53.
IPFW was led by Andy Sellan, Eddie Rivera and Anthony Randolph who had 16, 14 and 10 kills each. Rivera had a double-double with 11 digs.
