MVB Remains Undefeated After Downing Quincy, 3-1

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s volleyball team defeated MIVA foe Quincy in four sets (25-14, 25-10, 23-25, 25-14) to continue its spotless record in 2013. The Cardinals were led by sophomore Shane Witmer and senior Greg Herceg who both tallied kills in the double digits.

With the win, the Cardinals move to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in MIVA action, while the Hawks fall to 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

Witmer collected his second-career double-double after hitting 13 kills and getting under career-high tying 12 digs. Witmer hit at .370 (13-3-27). The sophomore outside attacker also had five assisted blocks and a solo block. Herceg had his fourth match of 2013 where he tallied double-digit kills, getting 10 for a .286 hitting percentage (10-4-21).

Junior Kevin Owens had his second match this season where he registered nine assisted blocks. The middle attacker contributed nine kills for a .438 clip (9-2-16) to go with two service aces. Owens also had two solo blocks. Fellow middle attacker Matt Leske had a solo block, three assisted blocks and six kills.

Junior setter Dan Wichmann tied his career-high in assisted blocks with six to go with his 34 assists. Junior libero Tommy Rouse added 10 digs for his 27th match with double-digit digs.

The Cardinals dominated the block, getting 18.0 total blocks to the Hawks’ 3.0 total blocks. Ball State hit at .252 (46-20-103) while Quincy managed a -.017 clip (32-34-116). BSU held the advantage in digs (41-29), assists (42-30) and service aces (6-4).

The Cardinals dominated the first set, hitting at .400 (13-3-25) while the Hawks managed .034 (8-7-29). Herceg connected on four kills in the first set, while Owens tallied four assisted blocks. As a team, the Cardinals had 4.5 total blocks in the first set, while the Hawks did not manage a block.

Witmer dominated the second set with four kills, a solo block and two assisted blocks. Owens chipped in four more assisted blocks, while Wichmann added three. The Cardinals benefitted from 16 attack errors by the Hawks.

Witmer continued his offensive explosion in the third set tallying five more kills while getting under four digs. Quincy had its best offensive performance of the match, hitting at .292 (10-3-24) while Ball State managed a .108 clip (15-11-37).

Herceg and Leske led the Cardinals in the fourth set with five and three kills, respectively. Both also added a service ace in the frame.

Quincy was led by Jack Gamache who had 13 kills, while Chris Lynch tallied 24 assists.
