MUNCIE, Ind. -- Four Cardinals scored in double figures Wednesday, led by Jauwan Scaife with a season-high 23 points, but it was not enough as the Ball State men's basketball team fell to Toledo 85-78 at Worthen Arena.

The Cardinals trimmed a 15-point Toledo lead to three in the final minute but ultimately ran out of time.

Scaife's 23 points marked the eighth game in the last nine where he scored in double figures. The senior guard was 11-of-12 from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds.

Jesse Berry added 18 points and hit 3-of-6 from 3-point range, while Majok Majok recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 15 boards. Chris Bond was 6-of-9 from the floor for 15 points and added three steals.

The Cardinals fell to 8-11 on the season and 2-5 in Mid-American Conference action, while the Rockets improved to 8-10 on the year and 4-3 in league play.

Ball State shot better than 45 percent for the game and out-rebounded Toledo 41-25, marking its sixth straight game with more rebounds than its opponent. But Toledo shot nearly 52 percent and turned the ball over only four times all night. The Rockets turned Ball State's 15 turnovers into 25 points.

"I thought our effort was good," Ball State head coach Billy Taylor said. "I thought our guys battled and fought hard for us. We just didn't have the urgency defensively throughout the course of the game that we normally have.

"We had some deflections, but we weren't able to generate enough turnovers to get out and run the floor and not have to go against set defense for the majority of the game."

Toledo was led by Rian Pearson, who scored a game-high 24 points. Matt Smith was 5-of-6 from behind the arc for 19 points, while Reese Holliday scored 16 and Julius Brown added 12 to go along with 10 assists for a double-double.

Ball State took a 37-35 lead into the intermission and led by as many as four early in the second half. But with the game tied 51-51 at the 11:42 mark, Toledo went on a 26-11 run to grab its largest lead of the night at 77-62 with 3:20 to play.

The Cardinals rallied to make things interesting down the stretch, clawing to within three points at 81-78 on a Scaife 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play. But Ball State was forced to foul and Dominique Buckley hit both free throws to help ice the game.

The top free throw shooting team in the MAC, Toledo knocked down 18 of 21 from the charity stripe.

Ball State is back in action Saturday when the Cardinals travel to take on MAC East Division opponent Bowling Green for a 2 p.m. contest.
