Woody's Career-High 29 points Lifts WBB Past Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Ball State junior guard Brandy Woody scored a career-high 29 points to lift the Cardinals to a 69-55 victory over Buffalo Wednesday night in Alumni Arena. With the win Ball State improves to 7-11 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference while Buffalo falls to 5-12 overall and 3-2 in league action.
The 4-1 conference start for the Cardinals is the best since the 2008-09 season when Ball State started out 4-0 in the MAC.
The Cardinals had three players reach double figures in the contest with Woody leading the way with a career best 29 points along with 11 rebounds and seven steals. Senior guard Shanee' Jackson had 15 points on the night while teammate sophomore guard Shelbie Justice ended the night with 11.
The Cardinals trailed 9-8 at the 12:40 mark but would then orchestrate a 9-0 run which was sparked by a three point basket from Woody off of the assist from junior Lyzz Smith.
After that, Ball State never looked back ending the half with a 32-18 advantage over Buffalo. While the Cardinals defense also forced 20 Buffalo turnovers, which allowed Ball State to score 18 points of those miscues.
Buffalo started the second half with a 9-2 run to cut Ball State's 14-point halftime advantage to 34-27. With 13:53 remaining the Bulls had made it a 37-35 ball game but the Cardinals answered quickly with a 17-5 run to go back up 54- 40 at the 6:51 mark after baskets from Woody, sophomore guard Brittany Carter and Justice.
The Cardinals did not trail the entire second half. Ball State only shot 29.6 percent for the game but did the job from the charity stripe shooting 79.5 percent. The Cardinals also had a total of 15 steals for the contest.
