Men's S&D Defeat IUPUI, Fall to Xavier

INDIANPOLIS -  The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team split its first competitive meet of the new year on the heels of two first place finishes by Joseph Morris. Ball State defeated hosted IUPUI 70-63, but fell to Xavier 73-58.

Morris swept the breaststroke competition, finishing in 57.18 in the 100 and 2:07.18 in the 200. David Wood came in sixth in the 100 with a time of 1:02.23 while Jon McCormick finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 2:18.71.

In the relays, the 200 medley relay of Michael Weber, Morris, Drew Tharp and Michael Oaks captured first place with a time of 1:34.92. The 200 free relay of Morris, Cole Smith, David Maxwell and Weber earned second with a time of 1:26.83.

In the diving competitions, Jake Brehmer earned third in the 1-meter and 3-meter with marks of 255.07 and 276.37, respectively. Evan Becker came in fifth in both events with scores of 186.00 and 203.02.

In the 50 free, Cole Smith came in fourth place with a time of 22.37, while Shane Brown was in fifth at 22.53. In the 100 free, Oaks earned third for the Cardinals with a time of 47.90. Tucker Hale was right behind in fourth at 48.81 followed by Austin Goodman at 49.17. Brown came in eighth with a clocking of 51.23.

The 200 free saw Oaks come in second (1:44.46) and Neal Fenning earn fifth (1:49.02). Nicholas Stevens earned fourth in the 500 free (4:53.47) and fifth in the 1000 free (10:12.38). Andy Lamb swam a 4:53.59 in the 500 free for fifth place and a 10:11.72 in the 1000 free for fourth place.

Weber came in second in the 100 back and third in the 200 back with times of 52.38 and 1:57.03, respectively. Hale came in fifth in the 100 back and Sullenbarger touched seventh with times of 55.21 and 55.94. In the 200 back, Sullenbarger earned fifth with a time of 2:02.75.

Tharp narrowly missed out on earning first place in the 200 fly, and finished second with a time of 1:55.38. He also came in second in the 100 fly with a time of 51.36. McCormick came in fifth in the 200 fly (2:02.40) and Ethan Hall earned fifth in the 100 fly (56.13).

In the 400 IM, Connor Snare earned second with a time of 4:22.45, while McCormick finished in fifth with a time of 4:24.53.

The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team is next in action on Jan. 19 when it hosts Eastern Michigan and Lewellen Pool at 2 p.m. Stay tuned to ballstatesports.com for more updates.
