WBB Earns 73-64 OT Victory Against Detroit Mercy

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State's women's basketball team tallied a 73-64 overtime victory over Detroit Mercy Thursday night in Worthen Arena.  With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-6 overall, while the Titans fell to 4-4.

The Cardinals had four player in double figures with freshman guard Nathalie Fontaine and teammate senior guard Shannee' Jackson leading the way with 18 points apiece.  The 18-point performance from Jackson was a career high.  Sophomore guard Brittany Carter ended the night with a season high 17 points while classmate guard Shelbie Justice had 10.

In a game that consisted of eight ties and 10 lead changes, Ball State trailed by eight (57-49) with 1:25 left in the game.  The Cardinals would then put together an 8-0 run after baskets from Fontaine, Carter and Jackson to knot the game 57-57 with six seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Justice opened OT with a layup, soon after that Detroit Mercy would tie the game twice with the last time being at the 2:33 mark after the Titans Audrey Matteson hit a three pointer to make the game 62-62.  Ball State would then lead the remainder of overtime which included some clutch free throws from Justice, Carter, Jackson and Woody.  Jackson sealed the overtime victory after making the last two charity shots of the contest.

Carter opened the contest with a trey to give Ball State the early 3-0 edge over Detroit Mercy.  The Titans would then put together an 8-0 run allowing UDM to take the 8-3 edge over the Cardinals. 

After that the Cardinals orchestrated an 11-6 run to tie the game 14-14 with help from Fontaine with 8:58 remaining in the first half.  Both teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, Ball State would then take back the lead at the 6:54 mark to go up 18-17 after a fastbreak layup from Fontaine.

Both teams continued to trade baskets the remainder of the half with the Cardinals earning the 28-25 halftime advantage over the Titans.

The Ball State women's basketball team will continue its two game homestand Saturday at 4 p.m. in Worthen Arena against Northern Kentucky.
