YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team finished fourth at the Eastern Michigan Invitational with 529 points. Several Cardinals had outstanding performances.
Junior Joseph Morris (South Bend, Ind./Clay) had the best finish for the Cardinals on the second day of competition, coming in second place in the 100 breast with a time of 55.34. Senior David Wood (Swayzee, Ind./Oak Hill) finished 13th with a time of 1:01.61, while freshman Jon McCormick (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) earned 14th place at 1:01.67.
Senior Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) touched sixth in the 100 back with a time of 51.25. Sophomore Andrew Sullenbarger (Centerville, Ohio/Carroll) finished 12th (54.11), junior Tucker Hale (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) came in 13th (54.50) and junior Cameron Watters (Daleville, Ind./Yorktown) was in 14th (56.14).
In the 200 free, junior Michael Oaks (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) turned in a time of 1:43.95 for eighth place. Senior Nicholas Stevens (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) turned in a time of 1:44.31 (ninth), sophomore Andy Lamb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) touched in 1:45.84 (13th), and freshman Austin Goodman (Camden, Ind./Delphi) finished in 1:51.08 (15th).
Oaks came in eighth in the 50 free with a time of 21.26. Freshman Cole Smith (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) finished 12th with a time of 21.71 while junior Shane Brown (Santee, Calif./West Hills) swam a 21.74 for 13th. Junior Ethan Hall (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) finished in 22.40 for 15th.
Weber finished ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.80. Morris earned 10th (1:55.21), sophomore Conner Snare (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) earned 15th (2:01.22) and Hale came in 18th (2:06.69).
Stevens came in ninth in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.48. Lamb earned 12th place with a time of 4:50.60. Sophomore Neal Fenning (Portland, Ind./Jay County) swam a 5:02.13 (15th) and Watters turned in a 5:03.80 (17th).
Junior Drew Tharp (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) earned 10th place in the 100 fly with a time of 51.20, while Hall came in 14th with a clocking of 55.82.
McCormick came in 10th in the 400 IM with a time of 4:18.61 while Snare finished right behind in 11th place at 4:24.18.
The 200 free relay team had the best relay finish for the Cardinals. The team of Morris, Oaks, Tharp and Weber came in fifth after combining for a time of 1:25.56. The 200 medley realy team of Weber, Morris, Tharp and Oaks finished sixth with a time of 1:33.80, while the 400 medley relay of Weber, Morris, Tharp and Hale also came in sixth, touching at 3:27.00. The 800 free relay squad of Oaks, Lamb, Stevens and Tharp earned eighth place with a time of 7:01.48.
This marks the end of competition for the semester for the Cardinals. Ball State will return Jan. 11 when it heads to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI and Xavier. Stay tuned to ballstatesports.com for more information.
