VERONA, Wis. - - The Ball State cross country team's five runners posted an average time of 23:05 to place 24th among the 32 teams at the 2012 NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Wisconsin at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
The Cardinals, who finished ahead of instate rivals IUPUI (25th), IPFW (26th) and Valparaiso (30th) as well as league rival Western Michigan (27th), posted a combined score of 713.
Michigan won the team title with 41 points, followed by Michigan State (77), Notre Dame (89), Butler (144) and Toledo (162). Ohio's Julie Accurso won the individual title with a time of 20:07.
In her final cross country race at Ball State, senior MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) led the Cardinals with a career-fast time of 22:09 to place 93rd overall in the 218-runner field.
Freshman Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) was BSU's second-best runner, placing 104th overall with a career-fast clocking of 22:12.
Sophomore Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) was next up for the Cardinals, clocking in at 22:58 to place 147th.
Also running for the Cardinals were junior Esther Tirado (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson) who placed 181st with a time of 23:50 and senior Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch) who finished 188th with a time of 24:08.
