Field Hockey Plays Away and Home This Weekend

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (3-10, 0-3 MAC) will have a split weekend, traveling to Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 13 before coming back to the BSU Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex to host Appalachian State on Cardinal Varsity Club Day on Sunday, Oct. 14.

The Cardinals are coming off a weekend where they dropped games to Ohio, 7-0, and No. 16 Ohio State, 9-1. Senior Marisa Weacther (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) scored her second goal of the season against the Buckeyes.

Seven Cardinals have scored at least two goals this season, with Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) leading the way with five goals. Freshman Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) has a team-high four assists.

Maddi Elliott (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) has made 50 saves this season, while Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi) has made 55. The Cardinals lead the MAC in saves per game, with 8.38 saves/per game for a .634 save percentage.

SCOUTING KENT STATE: The Golden Flashes are 5-10 overall this season and are 1-1 in MAC play. Kent State is coming off a weekend where they dropped games to Miami, 4-1, and No. 9 Northwestern, 8-0. Julia Hofmann leads the offense for the Golden Flashes, having scored 10 goals this season. Goalkeeper Jahna Jordan has made 114 saves this season and holds a 4.66 goal against average.

SERIES HISTORY: Ball State holds the all-time series record at 33-29. The Cardinals defeated the Golden Flashes 4-3 in overtime in Muncie the last time these two teams met, back on Oct. 22, 2011.

SCOUTING APPALACHIAN STATE: The Mountaineers have recorded a 2-10 mark this season and are 0-4 in the NorPac conference. Appalachian State is coming off losses to Davidson, 4-0, and Longwood, 5-4. The Mountaineers have a balanced scoring attack, with six players with at least three goals on the season. Sarah Anderson has made 101 saves this season and holds a 4.91 goals against average.

SERIES HISTORY: This will mark the third meeting between these two teams and each has gotten a win. The Mountaineers took the last game, 4-3 in overtime, on Aug. 28, 2010.

Ball State travels to Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 13 before coming back to the BSU Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex to host Appalachian State on Oct. 14 at noon in the Cardinal Varsity Club Day.
