•     Ball State Football Quick Hits . . . . . .

* Ball State suffered a 35-23 loss at home to Northern Illinois Saturday in a game where the Cardinals set a school record with 100 plays from scrimmage.  In addition, Ball State managed 563 yards of total offense, which ranks as the seventh highest single-game total in school history.  The Cardinals also tallied 20 first downs passing, which marked the second best single-game total in Ball State history -- behind only the school record of 22 set the week before at Kent State.

* Junior quarterback Keith Wenning threw a school record 71 passes and completed a Ball State record 42 passes, while throwing for 434 yards, which ranks as the fourth best single-game total in Cardinals history, in the game vs. Northern Illinois.

* Ball State tallied a 31-27 home victory Sept. 22, over South Florida from the Big East Conference.  The win marked a second straight win for the Cardinals over a Bowl Championship Subdivision school from one of the six automatic qualifying conferences.

* The Cardinals have beaten two teams from the BCS AQ conferences in the same year for the first time in school history.  Ball State defeated Indiana from the Big Ten Conference 41-39 Sept. 15. The win over Indiana marked the third straight meeting between the two teams the Cardinals have won.  Ball State also defeated the Hoosiers in 2008 in Bloomington, Ind. (42-20) and in 2011 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. (27-20).

*  Ball State ranks 21st in the nation in total offense (491.5), 26th in the country in passing offense (292.0) and 33rd in the nation rushing offense (199.5) . . . In net punting, Ball State ranks 12th in the NCAA statistics with a 41.36 average . . . The Cardinals are ninth in the nation in punt return yardage defense. Ball State has allowed only three punt returns on 27 punts in 2012 for a 2.0 yards-per-return average.

*  Ball State is fourth in the nation for fewest sacks allowed after allowing only 0.5 sacks per game in the first six games of 2012. The Cardinals are 40th in the nation in scoring offense with a 33.67 points-per-game average.

*  Ball State junior quarterback Keith Wenning (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater H.S.) threw for 434 yards -- the fourth most in a single game in school history -- vs. Northern Illinois . . . It marked his second straight 400-yard plus passing game . . . Wenning threw for a career high 445 yards at Kent State, which tied for the second highest single-game total in Ball State history . . . He has thrown for 879 yards in the last two games.

Wenning, who made his 28th consecutive career start vs. Northern Illinois, set Ball State records with 71 pass attempts (third most in Mid-American Conference history) and 42 completions vs. NIU . . . He broke his own school records in both categories . . . Wenning owns the top four single-game completion totals and the top three single-game attempt totals in Ball State history . . . He broke the pass attempts school record with his 52nd attempt at the 13:55 mark of the fourth quarter against the Huskies.

*  Junior wide receiver Jamill Smith (Muncie, Ind./South H.S.) set a career high with 14 catches vs. Northern Illinois . . . The 14 receptions ties for the second best single-game effort in Ball State history . . . The 14 receptions are the most ever by a Ball State receiver in Scheumann Stadium . . . It marked the second straight week a Ball State receiver has caught 14 passes in a single game . . . Sophomore wide receiver Willie Snead (Belle Glade, Fla./Muskegon, Mich. H.S.) set career highs with 14 catches, 216 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions at Kent State . . . Smith and Snead each have two 100-yard receiving games this season -- Smith vs. Eastern Michigan and NIU, and Snead at Kent State and vs. South Florida.

*  Junior tight end Zane Fakes (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield H.S.) set a career high with 11 catches for a career best 98 yards against Northern Illinois.

Scott Kovanda (Hartland, Mich./Detroit Catholic H.S.) punted four times vs. Northern Illinois and pinned the Huskies inside the 20-yard line one time . . . He has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line on 17 of his 25 punts this season.

Jonathan Newsome (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville H.S.) recorded 1.5 sacks vs. Northern Illinois . . . Ball State's team leader with 5.5 sacks this season, Newsome has 3.5 sacks over the past two games.

Ball State senior linebacker Travis Freeman (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville H.S.) had a team high 14 tackles vs. Northern Illinois . . . He has now led the Cardinals in tackles in five of six games this season.

Scouting Western Michigan: Western Michigan improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference with a 52-14 home victory over Massachusetts . . . WMU's conference loss was a 37-17 defeat at home to Toledo . . . WMU has also posted victories over Eastern Illinois (52-21) and Connecticut (30-24) . . . Tyle Van Tubbergen has started the last two games at quarterback and completed 58-of-89 passes for 595 yards with six TDs and four interceptions.

Series vs. Western Michigan: Ball State and Western Michigan have met 38 times in football and WMU owns a 21-17 all-time advantage in the series which began in 1971 . . . In games played in Muncie, Ind., the Cardinals own a 10-9 all-time edge . . . Ball State has won five of the last eight meetings.

Homecoming Record: Ball State is 51-32-2 all-time in Homecoming games.
