MUNCIE, Ind. - - After helping guide the women's volleyball team to the Ball State Tournament title last weekend, senior outside hitter Kara Bates (Bradley, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais Community/Maryland) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week, while junior libero Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) has been named the MAC West Division Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Bates, who earns MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the first time in her career, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Ball State Tournament after leading the Cardinals to wins over Pittsburgh (3-0), Wright State (3-0) and Wyoming (3-1) over the two-day event. She led all players in the tournament with a 4.00 kills-per-set average (40 kills), while hitting an impressive .330 (40-11-88) over the three matches. She also earned a pair of kill/dig double-doubles on the weekend and ranked sixth overall in the event with a 3.60 digs-per-set average.
Bates opened the tournament with 11 kills and 10 digs in the win over Pitt to earn her first kill/dig double-double of the season. On Saturday, she added 15 kills and a .444 (15-3-27) hitting mark against Wright State, and then posted 14 kills and a season-high 18 digs in the championship match victory over Wyoming. Bates added eight digs in the win over the Raiders, while posting seven total blocks over the tournament including four in the win over the Cowgirls.
Fredrich, who is now a five-time career MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week honoree, was also named to the all-tournament team. She led all players with a 5.40 digs-per-set average (54 digs), while posting a perfect 1.000 reception percentage over the two days by successfully passing all 33 service attempts she faced. Her passing helped Ball State post a .304 team hitting percentage in the tournament, while her defensive played helped limit BSU's opponents to a .137 hitting mark.
Fredrich opened the tournament with 15 digs and a 7-for-7 passing effort against Pittsburgh Friday evening. She followed with 17 digs and an 8-for-8 passing effort against Wright State Saturday morning. In the championship match win over Wyoming, Fredrich earned a tournament-best 22 digs, while successfully passing all 18 attempts she faced. Fredrich was also perfect from the service line over the weekend, keeping all 33 of her serves in play while adding an ace.
The Ball State women's volleyball team opens the 2012 Mid-American Conference season Thursday, when it hosts Toledo in a 7 p.m. first serve at Worthen Arena. The match will be televised live on the Ball State Sports Network (WIPB in Muncie).
