BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ball State football team (2-1) defeated Big Ten foe Indiana University (2-1) by a score of 41-39 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium on a game-winning 42-yard field goal by Steven Schott as time expired.
After Indiana scored a touchdown with 49 seconds left in the contest to take a 39-38 lead, junior quarterback Keith Wenning and the Ball State offense answered back by marching down the field to put themselves into position for the field goal.
The win marks the Cardinals' third straight victory over the Hoosiers dating back to 2008 and the second in two years under the guidance of second-year Ball State head coach Pete Lembo (2011, 2012).
"This is a very humbling experience right now," said Lembo, who has coached the Cardinals to two of their three wins against Indiana. "This is a great place, and Indiana is much improved. This was a great college football game. Both teams slugged it out."
Wenning had a good day offensively with three touchdown passes to move past Brent Baldwin (1993-96) and into a tie with Dave Wilson (1976-79) for fifth place on Ball State's career touchdown passes list with 36.
Ball State's defense limited the Indiana offense for much of the second half until two scores in the final five minutes gave the Hoosiers their bried lead. The Cardinals recorded three sacks in the game with junior defensive end Jonathan Newsome and linebacker Kenneth Lee each getting one.
The Hoosiers' touchdown with 4:07 left in the game made the score 38-32. Indiana would then attempt an onside kick in attempt to get the ball back, but Ball State recovered it. The Cardinals were forced to punt the ball back to IU, and the Hoosiers drove the field to take the 39-38 lead.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter, junior wide receiver Jamill Smith threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Wenning to give Ball State the 31-25 edge over the Hoosiers. The TD pass and the reception marked the first for Smith and Wenning. The Cardinals added another score with 4:11 on the clock after Wenning found Zane Fakes in the endzone for 11 yards to put Ball State up 38-25. The touchdown marked Fakes second of the day and fourth of his career.
Indiana got on the board first in the opening minutes of the game, when kicker Mitch Ewald nailed a 26-yard field goal. After battling defensively with the Hoosiers, the Cardinals got on the board at the 9:05 mark in the first quarter after Wenning connected on a two-yard touchdown pass to Fakes.
Ball State got the ball back on the Indiana 45-yard line after the Cardinals defense stopped the Hoosiers on a fourth and one. The ensuing possession resulted in a Ball State touchdown after Wenning threw a 34-yard TD pass to sophomore wide receiver Willie Snead making it a 14-3 contest. Indiana would then score its first touchdown of the quarter with 4:20 remaining off of a 13-yard TD run from running back Stephen Houston.
In the second quarter, Indiana scored first to put them ahead of the Cardinals 17-14. Ball State would knot the game at 17-17 at the 7:35 mark after Schott kicked a 51 yard field goal. Schott's field goal was his second 50-plus yard field goal of the season.
Sophomore Jahwan Edwards had a 1-yard touchdown run at the 4:35 mark in the second quarter to give the lead to Cardinals, 24-17. The touchdown marked Edwards' 15th of his career and fourth this season. Indiana ended the half with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to head into the locker room with the 25-24 edge over Ball State.
