Women's Tennis Ends Day One of Fall Invite

  MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team completed day one of action at its annual Fall Invitational Friday night.

The Cardinals started indoors at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center and then moved outdoors to the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center after the weather improved.

Newcomer Ayaka Terashi earned her first victory as a Cardinal in the No. 1 singles flight with a defeat over C. McNulty from Dayton.  Terashi then dropped her second match in three sets to C. Kiefer of IPFW.  Sophomore Courtney Wild fell to E. Marx of Illinois State in the Singles No. 1 flight but rebounded with a straight set victory (6-1, 6-2) to K. Hamel of Valparaiso in the consolation round.

Junior Kristel Sanders managed a 6-0, 6-1 win against M. Stevens of Dayton in the Singles 2 flight. Sanders will compete in the quarterfinals against M. Brown of Louisville on Saturday.

Freshmen Bethany Moore and classmate Courtney Earnest made their debut in the Singles Flight 3.  Moore won her first collegiate match after taking down M. Fredlake of Valparaiso, 6-2, 6-0.  Earnest dropped her first match but won in her consolation round with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lewis of Wright State.  Other singles winners for the day were senior Paola Rodriguez who advanced to the quarterfinals of singles flight 4.

In doubles action Wild and Moore won a 9-7 match in doubles flight 1 but lost in the second round.  The duo of senior Lauren Pickrel and Sanders advanced to the quarterfinals of doubles flight 2 along with the duo of Earnest and Rodriguez.

The Ball State women's tennis team will continue play at its invitational Saturday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.  First serve is set for 9 a.m.
