Cross Country Set For Indiana Intercollegiates
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After a strong showing at last weekend's IPFW Invitational, the Ball State cross country team returns to action Friday at 4:30 p.m. for the 5K Indiana Intercollegiates at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
The annual event is open to all Indiana colleges and universities who wish to participate in a scored competition.
Last season, the Cardinals placed sixth among 21 teams at the annual Indiana Intercollegiates which was hosted by Indiana University. Senior MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) led the Cardinals in the race with a 28th-place time of 18:59.
Mellen, who has been Ball State's top performer in the last eight meets dating back to last season, has ran on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course three times over her career with a personal-best 5K time of 19:31 set at the 2010 Sycamore Invite.
This season, Mellen is on pace to shatter that mark after posting a season-fast 5K time of 18:33.25 to place second overall at last weekend's IPFW Invitational.
BSU's top five runners combined for an average time of 19:12.33 last weekend, with freshman Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) placing second for the Cardinals and fourth overall with a time of 18:42.10, which was 36 seconds faster than her season-opening effort.Ball State's Top Individual 5K Times Of The 2012 Season
