MUNCIE, Ind. -- With six days to go until its 2012 season opener, the Ball State soccer team held an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Briner Sports Complex.

The Cardinals scrimmaged through three 30-minute periods with the white team eventually coming out on top of the black team by a score of 2-1.

"Both teams played very well," third-year Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "We were very consistent with what we've been trying to work on. There was some very strong intrasquad competition, which we've tried to create, and I'm very pleased with the standard of performance from both teams."

After a scoreless first period, the white team got on the board nearly seven minutes into the second when freshman Morgan Whitfield corralled a loose ball in traffic right in front of the goal and put the ball into the net.

The black team converted later in the period on a goal from sophomore Nicole Pembleton to even the score at 1-1 heading into the third period. But the white team grabbed the lead back halfway through the third when sophomore Lindsay Kempf chipped a ball just over the head of the keeper for what proved to be the game-winner.

The black team continued to apply pressure and had its best chance to tie the score with just under nine minutes to play, but a free kick from just outside the box hit the crossbar and the white team held on.

"The black team created a lot of chances; they just couldn't put their chances away," Roberts said. "The white team was patient and they simply did put their chances away."

Ball State is gearing up to open the regular season Friday, Aug. 17 against Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. The Cardinals will play at home for the first time the weekend of Aug. 24-26 when they host their own tournament.

BSU is poised for a strong year with the return of 21 letterwinners from a year ago. The team improved in 2011 for the second year under Roberts, posting a record of 9-9-3 with a roster composed largely of underclassmen.

"The attitude of the girls going into the season has been the highest level since I've been at Ball State," Roberts said. "We still need to tweak one or two things, but we're aware of those, and we know what we need to do. We're just really excited to get into the first competition."
