MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University head men's tennis coach Bill Richards guided the Central Indiana District 18-and-under boys tennis team to the 2012 USTA/Midwest Section District Team Cup-B18 championship title last weekend in the annual event held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
"It was a dominating performance by our team as indicated by our match scores," commented Richards. "Our Central Indiana District has been blessed with a lot of talent in recent years. We finished third two years ago, second last year and finally brought the championship trophy back this year. All 10 players contributed and it was true team championship. It is a very physically demanding event playing six dual matches in three days. Our depth allowed us to split playing time and keep our top players fresh for final matches. This is a very significant accomplishment for our District and I am proud to be a part of our success."
The USTA Midwest Section is comprised of 14 districts split among five states; Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Central Indiana Team consists of individuals from the central and southern partions of the state, including Muncie and all parts south.
This year's squad featured eight players from Indianapolis, one from Bloomington and one from Floyds Knob which is near Louisville.
Richards, who has been at the helm of the team for the last five years, led the Central Indiana squad to an undefeated record with wins over: North West Ohio (7-0), Northern Michigan (7-0), Western Michigan (6-1), Northern Indiana (7-0), Wisconsin (7-0) and Chicago (6-1).
