MUNCIE, Ind. - - For the second time this season, Ball State freshman outfielder/designated player Hanne Stuedemann (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week. She first earned the honor March 11.
"Hanne has had a very impressive freshman season," said Ball State head coach Craig Nicholson. "She came up with some timely hits last weekend and was a spark for our offense. With performances like that, she is putting herself in contention for MAC Freshman of the Year."
Stuedemann helped guide the Cardinals to a 3-1 record last week by posting a team-high .538 batting average, tallying seven hits in 13 at bats. Of the seven hits, three were doubles and one was a home run. She also drew two walks and was hit by a pitch to finish the weekend with a .625 on base percentage.
After recording at least one hit in all four games, Stuedemann ran her streak of safely reaching base to 39 games. Stuedemann also made one of the best defensive plays of her career Saturday at Buffalo, with a spectacular running over the shoulder grab to help the Cardinals shut out the Bulls over the final three innings.
In the series opener at Kent State, Stuedemann drove in two of the Cardinals three runs with a double to right center field. She drove in two more runs in the nightcap versus the Golden Flashes, helping the Cardinals explode for a four-run second inning to take control of the game.
With the Cardinals trailing 3-0 in Saturday's opener at Buffalo, Stuedemann would spark a game-tying rally in the third with an RBI groundout for BSU's first run of the game. She would later score a pivotal insurance run after being hit by a pitch to reach base.
In the series finale at UB, Stuedemann once again scored the game's first run, while launching the longest home run of the weekend by clearing the Nan Harvey Field scoreboard to help BSU build upon its MAC single-season home run total.
Gilbert and the Ball State softball team close the 2012 regular season this weekend with four games at the BSU Softball Complex. The Cardinals open the week with a Friday doubleheader versus Toledo (1 p.m.), before hosting MAC East Division leader Bowling Green Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).With wins in three of the four games this weekend, the Ball State softball team will lock up its third Mid-American Conference regular season title in the past four years.
