   MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite a pair of first-place finishes from senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.), the Ball State women's swimming & diving team suffered a 183.5-113.5 setback to Mid-American Conference rival Miami Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.

   With the loss, the Cardinals end the 2009-10 regular season with a 10-7 (1-6 MAC) mark. BSU will now have two-and-a-half weeks to prepare for the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be hosted by the RedHawks (8-4/5-2 MAC) February 24-27.

   Led by Karwoski's pair of wins, the Cardinals finished the meet with first-place efforts in three of the meets 16 events. In addition, BSU scored 21 top-three efforts on the day.

   The meet opened with the RedHawks claiming wins in the first 11 events, before Karwoski broke through in the 200 breaststroke with a winning time of 2:25.20. Three events later, she notched her second victory of the afternoon with a clocking of 2:12.58 in the 200 individual medley.

   Karwoski also added a second-place time of 1:07.41 in the 100 breaststroke and was a member of the second-place 200 medley relay which opened the meet with a time of 1:48.73. Joining Karwoski on in the 200 medley relay were sophomores Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) and Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.), as well as junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.)

   Fellow senior Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central) added a pair of second-place efforts on the day, posing a score of 255.38 on the one-meter diving board and 262.28 in the three-meter event.

   In addition to finishing second in the 200 medley relay, Bylsma placed second in the 50 freestyle (24.88) and tied teammate Jillian Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights H.S.) for second in the 100 freestyle with both posting a time of 54.37.

   In the 200 individual medley, senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) and freshman Morgan Baumgartle (Georgetown, Ind./Floyd Central) logged times of 2:13.83 and 2:17.92, respectively, to join Karwoski in a sweep of the top three spots.

   Rounding out BSU's top individual performers was junior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) with a second-place time of 2:07.69 in the 200 butterfly. Gramelspacher was also BSU's top performer in the 100 butterfly, placing third in 58.84.

   BSU's third event win of the day came in the meet's last event, when senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), Bylsma, Bischoff and sophomore Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) combined for a time of 7:52.84.

   Prior to Saturday's meet, the Cardinals honored its out-going 2009-10 senior class who were swimming in their final meet at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. BSU seniors include: Ehresman, Chelsea Giuffre (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph H.S.), Kaitlin Jasmon (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin H.S.), Kelly Johnson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.), Karwoski, Kehe, Maertin and Allyson McGaha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth H.S.).
