Cardinals Chosen for Field Hockey National Chance

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State field hockey players Tori Widrick and Bethany Han, along with assistant coach Christy Longacre, have been selected to compete in the USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship.

Additionally, Cameron Daniels has been chosen to play in the U21 National Championship.

The Women’s National Championship is held annually and features the most elite athletes in the country, including top collegiate players, current National Team members and members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team.

"We are very excited to have two current players and our new assistant selected to compete in the High Performance Championship," Ball State head coach Beth Maddox said. "They will represent Ball State well, and we could not be more proud. And to have Cameron selected to play in the Under 21 tournament is amazing. This is a great opportunity for our players to compete at the highest level over the summer. As a coach, it makes me really excited for the fall."

Athletes train at High Performance sites throughout the country in the hopes of being named to the Women's National Championship squad for their region. The six regional squads then face off in June for the prestigious title of national champion.

The Women’s National Championship serves as the selection trials for the U.S. Women's National Squad. The 2014 Women’s National Championship will be held at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa., June 16-21.

Widrick, a rising senior, recorded three goals and five assists last season to rank second on the Ball State team with 11 total points. Han, a rising junior, notched a pair of goals and assists. She and Daniel, another rising junior, were two of six Cardinals who started all 18 games a year ago.

Longacre, a two-time All-American at Old Dominion, will enter her first year as the Ball State assistant field hockey coach this fall.
