Ball State has 11 student-athletes represented on the Phil Steele Publications Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Team, which is the third most of the 13 MAC schools.

Jahwan Edwards and Jordan Williams were selected to the first team, while Ben Ingle and Brian Jones were named to the second team.  Nick Miles, Jacob Richard, Jalen Schlachter and Kyle Schmidt are third-team honorees, while Eric Patterson, Zack Ryan and Scott Secor made the fourth team.

Edwards, a senior running back for the Cardinals, was a 2013 All-MAC Second Team selection after rushing for 1,110 yards as a junior.  He ranked 19th in the nation last season with 14 rushing touchdowns, which tied his own mark of 14 in 2012 for the third-best single-season total in Ball State history.  Edwards set the Ball State career rushing TD record (39) and the school’s career total touchdown record (39) as a junior.

Williams, a 2013 All-MAC Third Team choice, is a junior wide receiver for Ball State.  He played in 12 games last season and managed 72 catches for 1,050 yards and 10 touchdowns.  Williams had a career high 12 catches for 124 yards vs. Akron in 2013.

Ingle, a junior linebacker, was a 2013 All-MAC Second Team honoree after leading the Cardinals in tackles a season ago.  He tallied 116 tackles last season, plus added one sack and one interception.  Jones, who will be a fifth-year senior safety for the Cardinals in 2014, managed 97 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and six pass breakups a year ago.  Jones was second for the team in tackles last season.

Miles, a senior defensive end, started 25 straight games for the Cardinals and tallied 42 tackles, including 8.5 TFLs with five sacks in 2013. Schmidt, a sophomore punter, averaged 40.9 yards per punt as a redshirt freshman in 2013.  Peterson will be in his final season as a defensive back after registering 63 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and eight pass breakups as a junior.  Ryan, a sophomore linebacker, tallied 92 tackles with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery as a redshirt freshman last season.  He was third for the Cardinals in tackles in 2013.

Richard and Schlachter, a pair of junior offensive linemen, helped anchor an offensive line that blocked for record setting seasons by Keith Wenning (quarterback), Willie Snead (wide receiver) and Edwards last season.  The duo also helped Ball State rank 17th in the nation for fewest sacks allowed with an average of only 1.17 per game.

Ball State completed the 2013 season with a 10-3 overall record and a second straight bowl appearance when the Cardinals competed in the GoDaddy Bowl.  Ball State will open the 2014 season with a home game vs. Colgate Sat., Aug. 30, at Scheumann Stadium.
