ATHENS, Ohio - - Senior thrower Erin Walker (Laurell Hill, Fla./Troy University) paced the Ball State track & field team on the first day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Ohio, with a 12th-place showing in the hammer throw.
With just three events completed on the first day of competition, Miami holds the overall lead in the 12-team event with 23 points. Akron is second at 22 points, followed by Central Michigan (19), Bowling Green (18), Ohio (18), Kent State (10), Toledo (6) and Eastern Michigan (1). Ball State, Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan were all held scoreless on the opening day.
In her first trip to the MAC Outdoor Championships, Walker turned in a distance of 47.83m in her third and final attempt in the hammer throw to claim 12th among the 20 student-athletes entered in the event.
In her first of three events at the MAC Outdoor Championships, sophomore Michaela Hull (Bloomington, Ind./South) took home 14th place in the javelin throw with an opening toss of 28.84m.
Rounding out Ball State’s opening day competitors were senior Madelyn Webster (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and freshman Jordan Timmons (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) in the 10,000m run. Both posted career-best times in the event, placing 21st (39:19.59) and 22nd (39:34.42), respectively.
The Ball State track & field team is scheduled to compete in eight events on the second day of the three-day competition Friday, starting at 1 p.m. with Webster in the 1500m run and junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) in the long jump.
