Menís Volleyball Places 13 On Academic All-MIVA Team

   SAN MARCOS, Texas - - A total of 13 members of the Ball State men’s volleyball team were named to the 2014 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Academic All-Conference Team.

   The MIVA recognized a total of 110 student-athletes on the academic all-conference squad, including four with a 4.0 grade-point average. To be eligible, student-athletes must have achieved at least a career 3.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale after the completion of the fall semester at their respective institutions.

   “We have a great group of student-athletes on our team,” Ball State head coach Joel Walton said. “They are extremely focused on both a competitive and athletic level, and have a high drive to be successful in both areas. We stress to our team the importance of an education in preparing for life after competitive sports. They continually show their understanding of that importance with strong academic performances.”

   Highlighting Ball State’s list of Academic All-MIVA selections are five-time honoree Matt Leske (Highwood, Ill./Highland Park) and four-time selections Graham McIlvaine (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Kevin Owens (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral). Shane Witmer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) also picked up the award for the third time.

   Jack Lesure (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Marcin Niemczewski (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) are both two-time selections, while Hiago Garchet (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pitagoras), Connor Gross (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North), Austin Overby (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central)Alex Pia (Johns Creek, Ga./Johns Creek), Brendan Surane (Lockport, Ill./Providence Catholic), Matt Sutherland (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and Nate Wolf (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) each earn the honor for the first time in their careers.

   Ball State's Garchet was one of the four MIVA players honored with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
