MUNCIE, Ind. – The Mid-American Conference announced the 2014 Women’s Swimming and Diving MAC All-Academic Team and Honorable Mention list today, as voted by the faculty athletic representatives from the member MAC institutions. Ball State led the MAC with 12 selections, the most the Cardinals have ever placed on the list.

“I am very proud of our student-athletes and their achievements in the classroom and in the pool,” said head coach Kristy Castillo. “They are a dedicated team and I’m happy they are getting recognized for their hard work. They put a high importance on their studies and this award is evidence of that. With this being the highest number we have ever placed on the list, the bar has been raised for future seasons.”

The five members named to the MAC All-Academic team included First Team All-MAC honorees Haley Richter and Bridgette Ruehl, Second Team All-MAC members Mallory Miles and Emily Wisolek along with Jackie Iglesias. Wisolek and Iglesias earned 4.0 GPAs during the fall semester. Miles and Wisolek have been named to the MAC All-Academic team three times in there career while this season marks the second time Iglesias, Richter and Ruehl have earned a spot on the list.

Earning spots on the Honorable Mention List were: Sumaiyah Ahmad, Carlena Magley, Leighann Mattson, Elaine Pitsas, Jordan VanWinkle, Stacey Wierman and Madie Zirzow.

Ball State placed the most members on both lists with 12, while Miami earned 10 spots on the list. The RedHawks led the conference with seven selections to the MAC All-Academic team, with the Cardinals in second place with five honorees.

The Cardinals earned a distinction earlier this year from the College Swimming Coaches Association of American for Scholar All-America Team after compiling a MAC-best 3.52 team GPA during the fall semester. The GPA was the seventh-best in the nation. Ball State placed 16 student-athletes onto the Dean’s List following the fall semester.

A total of 27 student-athletes were named to the women’s MAC All-Academic team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team is the number set for the specific sport of 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
