CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Ball State junior distance runner Courtney Edon (New Palsetine, Ind./New Palestine) has been named to the 2014 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team as announced today by the league office.
Edon, who earned recognition on the 2013 Cross Country Academic All-MAC Team in the fall, is one of 33 female student-athletes to earn the award which is voted on by the league’s faculty athletics representatives. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
“Courtney is very deserving of this award,” said Ball State head coach Randy Heisler. “As a nursing major, she has one of the most demanding class schedules on the team. This award is a testament to the amount of time she puts into not only her school work, but the training and practice she is able to accomplish around her busy class load.”
Edon, a nursing major with a 3.911 grade-point average, ran in eight of the Cardinals’ nine indoor meets this season. She placed first in the 5000m run at Tom Hathaway Distance Classic (Feb. 15) with a time of 18:17.75, while clocking a season-fast 5000m run of 18:06.60 one week earlier to earn fourth at the Hillsdale Wide-Track Classic (Feb. 7-8). Edon turned in a season-best clocking of 10:25.31 in the 3000m run at the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 24-25) to place 22nd in the event. She was also a member of the 12th-place distance medley relay which turned in a time of 12:34.03 at the 2014 MAC Indoor Championships (Feb. 28-March 1).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
