MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team (16-8, 6-2 MAC) ended its Mid-American Conference regular season in fashion after a dominating 6-1 win over Western Michigan (13-10, 2-5 MAC) Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
The Cardinals tallied its 16th win of the season, which is the most since it won 16 in 1994-95. Ball State's 6-2 MAC record also marks the best finish in program history. The best league finish prior to this season was five which happened on five different occasions, the last time being 2013-14 when Ball State finished 5-3.
"We are very proud to be Ball State Cardinals today," said Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris. "Today was a great team effort where everyone competed well. Western Michigan is a competitive and well coached team so it was great to pull out some tough matches. Going ahead we are excited for the MAC tournament and we will represent Ball State with toughness and heart."
Ball State opened up strong in doubles, winning two of the three matches, the third match was abandoned after the twosome of Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore took care of business on court one by defeating Kathleen Hawkins and Caroline Aleck, 8-1. The duo of Kristel Sanders and Toni Ormond were the first tandem off the court after taking down Nini Sujashvill and Tracy Kuhl, 8-3, at the No. 2 position.
In singles, the Cardinals won five of the six matches. The lone senior Sanders celebrated her day by giving Ball State a 2-0 lead as she quickly knocked off Melka Ashby in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 on court three. Earnest put Ball State up 3-0 as she won her match 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Wild clinched the fourth point for the Cardinals as she took down Sujashvill on the top court, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, Ormond would give Ball State its sixth point of the day with her 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Yuriko Ono.
After this weekend, Ball State will compete at the 2014 MAC Tournament in Oxford, Ohio hosted by Miami University (April 25-27).
