BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Meghan Perry and Sarah Westaway led the Ball State women's golf team to the top of the leaderboard in Saturday’s opening round at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational.

The Cardinals posted a team score of 304 (+16), one shot better than Eastern Michigan, to lead the 15-team field. South Dakota State and Chicago State are tied for third, 11 shots back of Ball State.

The second and final round of Bowling Green’s tournament is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Sunday at Stone Ridge Golf Club.

Perry is tied for the individual lead after a round of 1-over par 73. She shares the top spot with Sydney MacDonald of South Dakota State. Westaway is one shot back, tied for third with Detroit’s Lindsey Lammers, after a 74.

It was a steady day for the top two Cardinals. Perry bogeyed her first hole and then rattled off 17 pars in a row. Westaway finished her round with 16 pars and two bogeys. Both players turned in their best scores of the spring.

“We did not make a lot of birdies today, but we really stayed away from the big numbers,” Ball State head coach Katherine Mowat said. “The conditions were nice early, and we got off to a good start. The wind picked up significantly at the end, but our team continued to play steady and never faltered.”

Ball State also counted a 78 from Mary Welch and a 79 from Karley Dobis in Saturday’s round. Welch is tied for 13th, while Dobis is tied for 21st in the field of 90 golfers. Kelsey Sear rounded out the Cardinals’ lineup with an 84.

Ball State's Meghan McDougall and Brenna Obergfell are competing as individuals this weekend. McDougall opened with an 82, while Obergfell shot an 85.

The Cardinals are competing for the final time before the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships. Ball State will host that event April 25-27 at The Hawthorns in Fishers, Ind.
