MUNCIE, Ind. - Former Ball State men's tennis player Jon Wegener has joined the women's tennis coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, according to Ball State head coach Max Norris.

"Being a Muncie local and former Ball State student, Jon represents Muncie and Ball State with pride, class, and character," Norris said. "He was one of the hardest workers on the men's team when I was the manager and he understands what it means to represent Ball State."

Wegener will be a volunteer assistant for the women's tennis program.  He returns to Ball State after playing for the Cardinals under the direction of head men's tennis coach Bill Richards.  Wegener helped the Cardinals claim their 20th Mid-American Conference Tournament title after Ball State took down Toledo in 2011 at Western Michigan's Sorenson Courts.  That year Ball State earned the opportunity to compete in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Ohio State.

In 2011 Wegener transferred to Taylor University where he played at the No. 1 singles position.  He then transitioned into becoming an assistant coach for the Taylor men's tennis program in 2012.  Wegener graduated from Taylor in the fall of 2013 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science.  From September of 2013 until November, Wegener toured Colombia while competing in tennis tournaments on the Futures circuit.  After that, Wegener became a teacher at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center, where he will continue his duties while helping coach the Cardinals.

Wegener was raised in Muncie and attended Heritage Hall Christian School.  He is the son of James and Joy Wegener.  He has three sisters, Julie, Jenny, and Janet,  and four brothers, Jimmy, Josh, Joe and Jason.  Wegener was born September 27, 1989, in Denver, Colo.
