AVON, Ind. -- Ball State sophomore Tyler Ostrom fired a 1-under par 71 to grab a share of the first-round lead Monday on the men’s side of the Butler Spring Invitational.
Four men’s golfers and three women’s golfers from Ball State are competing as individuals in the event at Prestwick Country Club.
Kelsey Sear led the three Ball State women’s golfers with a 78 on a Prestwick course that is playing to a par 71 for the women’s portion of the event. Sear is tied for 12th place, five strokes out of a three-way tie for first.
On the men's side, Ostrom is tied at the top with Garrett Browning of Robert Morris with 18 more holes to play Tuesday. That pair is two shots clear of a group of six golfers that shot 73 in Monday’s opening round.
Ball State’s Albert Jennings and Derek Kundenreich each shot 76 to tie for 16th place through one round in the field of 43 golfers. Kundenreich, a Yorktown, Ind., product who joined the team at the end of the fall, is competing in his first event. Quentyn Carpenter shot an 81 for the Cardinals.
The 36-hole tournament is slated to conclude with the final round Tuesday. A shotgun start is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
Robert Morris leads the men’s team race by nine shots, while Butler owns a one-shot lead on the women’s side. Ball State is not competing as a team.
