Womenís Golf Eighth after Two Rounds in Arizona

RIO VERDE, Ariz. -- Mary Welch led the Ball State women’s golf team Saturday with a round of 3-over par 74 to join teammate Jenna Hague in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard through two rounds at the Rio Verde Invitational.

The Cardinals posted a team score of 316 for the day and dropped to eighth place in the 18-team field with a 36-hole total of 619 (+51). The final round on the Quail Run course at Rio Verde Country Club gets underway Sunday at 8 a.m. MT (10 a.m. ET) with live scoring at golfstat.com.

Ball State’s Karley Dobis was tied for the individual lead but was disqualified after Saturday’s round for signing an incorrect scorecard. The sophomore, who fired a career-best 73 in Friday’s opening round, shot a 75 Saturday. The playing partner keeping her score had her down for one shot better than that, and Dobis did not realize it before signing her card.

The Cardinals were in fourth place before the disqualification, seven strokes off the lead, but dropped four spots after it. They counted Welch’s score of 74 along with a 77 from Hague, an 80 from Meghan Perry and an 85 from Sarah Westaway.

Xavier is leading the event at 601 (+33) after turning in the best round of the tournament so far with a 298 Saturday. Wichita State (603) is second, and first-round leader Montana (604) is third.

Six players are tied for the individual lead at 6-over par 148 through two rounds of play. Ball State’s Hague and Welch are just three shots of the pace at 151 (+9) in a tie for 13th.

Perry owns a two-day total of 161, while Westaway sits at 164. Meghan McDougall, competing for the Cardinals as an individual, is at 173.

Dobis can play again Sunday and count toward Ball State’s team score in the final round, but she can no longer contend for individual medalist honors.
