Men's S&D Completes First Day of MAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition at the 2014 MAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The Cardinals sit in sixth place with 66 points led by Jake Brehmer and Cole Smith.

Senior Jake Brehmer earned a spot in his first-career event finals at the MAC Championships after turning in a score of 288.30 in the 1-meter preliminaries. Brehmer would turn in a score of 291.70 in the event finals to finish in eighth place.

Cole Smith was the second Cardinal to advance to the event session after finishing ninth in the morning preliminaries with a season-best time of 20.80 in the 50 free. Smith would finish 12th overall with a time of 20.94.

In the 500 free, Andrew Lamb led the way with a 22nd place finish in the morning preliminaries after clocking a season-best 4:42.32. Neal Fennig and JD Middleton both finished with lifetime-best times of 4:43.30 and 4:49.73, respectively. Cameron Watters touched with a season-best time of 4:54.47.

Tanner Barton clocked a lifetime best 1:55.38 in the 200 IM preliminaries to finish in 21st place while Jacob Eckert earned a season-best time of 1:58.49 for 27th place.

Every Cardinal who participated in the 50 free preliminaries earned a season-best time. Austin Green and Logan Kisinger finished 23rd and 30th with lifetime bests of 21.26 and 21.46. Michael Oaks and Tucker Hale followed with times of 21.67 and 21.98 while Nick Rodriguez finished with a lifetime-best time of 22.13. Drew Sullenbarger (22.15), Drew Tharp (22.34), Bradley Ridge (22.36) and Mitch Prather (22.86) rounded out the event for the Cardinals.

The 200 free relay of Green, Oaks, Kisinger and Smith finished in sixth place after turning in a season-best time of 1:23.49. The 400 medley relay of Drew Sullenbarger, Conner Snare, Tharp and Smith turned in a season-best time of 3:29.28 for seventh place.
