MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team will host Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at Lewellen Aquatic Center. The Cardinals are coming off a full weekend having faced Eastern Michigan in a dual meet before competing in the Butler Invitational.
Senior diver Jake Brehmer qualified for the NCAA Zone meet for the first time in his career after tallying a score of 303.10 at Eastern Michigan last weekend. Brehmer’s score was a lifetime best and makes him the first male diver from Ball State to head to the postseason event since the 2006-07 season.
Two-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week Drew Tharp earned two individual wins and posted two season-bests last weekend. Against the Eagles, Tharp finished second in the 200 free with a 1:44.62 and sixth in the 100 free with a season-best 49.02. At the Butler Invitational, the senior earned wins in the 100 and 200 fly in a field that included swimmers from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Xavier University and the University of Evansville. Tharp clocked a 51.31 in the 100 fly and a season-best 1:53.84 in the 200 fly.
Buffalo is 5-2 on the season and is on a three-meet winning streak after picking up victories against Michigan State, St. Bonaventure and Miami. Buffalo and Ball State last met in a dual meet on Nov. 10, 2009 when the Bulls pulled out a 158-137 win.
Buffalo’s Daniel O’Connor ranks first in the MAC in the 1000 free, 1650 free, and 400 IM as well as second in the 500 free heading into the meet. In addition, Mike Dugan ranks second in the 50 free and third in the 100 back while Charles Barry is third in the 200 back.
