Behind the strength of first-place finishes from Erin Patchey on the floor and the vault and a first-place performance from Angela Durkac on the bars, Ball State's gymnastics team defeated Iowa Friday night.
The Cardinals tallied a 189.975 to 188.875 victory to improve to 2-3 on the season.
On the vault, Patchey won the event with a score of 9.725, while Sarah Ebeyer tallied a 9.60 to finish third.
The Cardinals moved to the bars where Durkac took first with a 9.775 and Brooklyn Schumacher was second with a 9.725.
Ball State collected three of the top five spots on the balance beam. Jessica Leko was third with a 9.575, while Samantha Santos was fourth with a 9.525 and Miranda Kuehl was fifth with a 9.475. Leko's mark on the beam was a career high.
Patchey's first-place performance on the floor was a personal best 9.775, while Denasiha Christian placed fifth with a 9.650.
Ball State will compete at Northern Illinois Friday in its Mid-American Conference opener.
