Women's Tennis Sweeps Both Home Matches Friday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team opened the 2014 season with a 7-0 sweep over in-state rivals Valparaiso and IUPUI Friday in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  The win marked the first for first-year head coach Max Norris.

The Cardinals began competition today against the Crusaders, which started off with a dominating doubles performance.  Courtney Wild and Ayaka Terashi started Ball State off with a good start, winning a 6-1 match over Valparaiso's No. 6 doubles tandem Megan Paras and Kaitlyn Hamel.  After that, Bethany Moore and Kristel Sanders earned a 6-0 win at the No. 1 position to give the Cardinals the 1-0 advantage over the Crusaiders heading into singles action.

Sanders posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Megan Barthels at the No. 3 slot to put Ball State up 2-0 over Valparaiso.  Toni Ormond, Courtney Earnest, Anna Rozenberg, Wild and Marin Kanii all followed with straight sets victories.  Ormond did not give up a point in her win over Paras at No. 5 singles with the 6-0, 6-0 defeat.

In the night cap, the No. 2 doubles tandem of Ormond and Earnest captured a 6-0 win over Abbey Neff and Julie Brockman.  Earnest and Sanders paired up at No. 3 to earn a 6-1 win , putting Ball State up 1-0 over IUPUI.

Ball State swept all six of its singles matches, No. 1 thru No. 5 all won in straight sets.  Rozenberg won her first set over Brookman at No. 6 singles but would drop the second set before winning the third set tie breaker.

The Ball State women's tennis team will continue action at Kentucky, Saturday at 6 p.m.
