Future Cardinals Recognized Nationally

MUNCIE, Ind. – Two of the newest members of the Ball State men’s volleyball team have gotten recent accolades. Alex Pia and Brendan Surane were named to Volleyball Magazine’s Boys’ Fab 50 list, presented by Mizuno, and Pia was also named to the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Volleyball Team.

Volleyball Magazine, the only printed publication covering all aspects of volleyball has released an annual list highlighting the best boys and girls in the game for the last three decades. This year’s list was voted on by Division I-II coaches representing the top programs. The MIVA had eight representatives named to the list.

Pia will join the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team at the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championships in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, on June 27 – July 7. The 12-member team was selected through USA Volleyball High Performance tryouts held across the country. The team represents 10 stats and nine USA volleyball regions. 

The team trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and will participate in a pre-championship tournament with several other countries. Pool A consists of Belarus, Tunisia, Mexico, China and Poland. Pool B is comprised of Argentina, Cuba, Japan, Chile and Turkey. Pool C is made up of Russia, Iran, France, Rwanda and Finland. The United States is in Pool D and is joined by Brazil, Egypt, Korea and Algeria.

The United States opens play Thursday, June 27 against Algeria at 5 p.m. EST, followed by Brazil on June 28 at 10 p.m. EST, Egypt on June 30 at 8 p.m. EST and Korea on July 1 at 5 p.m. EST. All of the United States’ matches will be held in the Auditorio del Estado in Mexicali, Mexico.
