Merkel Takes 15th at Prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Ball State men's golfer Tyler Merkel tied for 15th place at the 60th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions, which concluded Sunday at Sunnehanna Country Club.
Merkel, an Evansville, Ind., native and rising senior, posted a four-day total of 4-over par 284 on the par-70 course. He carded his best round of the tournament with a 1-under 69 in Sunday's final round to climb 12 spots up the leaderboard.
One of the most presitigous amateur tournaments in the country, this year's event featured a record 83 players. Among the former Sunnehanna Amateur champions are Rickie Fowler, Webb Simpson, Lucas Glover, Scott Verplank and Ben Crenshaw.
Steven Ihm of the University of Iowa finished as this year's champion, while Cory Whitsett of the University of Alabama was the runner-up.
Blackwell Wins Clete Fox Invitational
Earlier this month, Ball State's James Blackwell was part of the winning duo at the Clete Fox Invitational at Transit Valley Country Club in East Amherst, N.Y. Blackwell, a product of Buffalo, N.Y., teamed with partner Eric Rosen to win the 54-hole, better-ball tournament. Blackwell recently completed his freshman season at Ball State.
Cardinals Set for Indiana Amateur
Four current Cardinals and two soon-to-be members of the Ball State men's golf team will compete this week at the 113th Indiana Amateur Championship at South Bend Country Club.
Ball State's McCormick Clouser, Albert Jennings, Connor O'Neal and Tyler Ostrom will be in the field along with incoming freshmen Quentyn Carpenter and Keegan McKinney for the tournament, which begins Monday.
A Ball State golfer has won the state amateur two of the past three years with Eric Steger taking home the title in 2010 and Merkel winning last year.
