MUNCIE, Ind. - Playing in its last match of the season, the Ball State men's tennis team wrapped Mid-American Conference regular season play after posting a 6-1 win over Buffalo Sunday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.  The Cardinals improved to 12-11 overall and 2-2 in the MAC while Buffalo fell to 11-7 on their campaign and 1-3 in league action.

"Our guys did a great job today," said Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards.  "We fought back after being down to win the doubles point. Then we carried that momentum into the singles winning all 6 first sets. Buffalo never quit and made a run in several 2nd sets. We withstood their run and worked through some pressure situations to close out the match.  It was good way to finish the regular season!"

With the win, the Ball State men's tennis team secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 2014 Mid-American Conference Tournament (April 25-26).  The Cardinals earned the right to host the tournament after being crowned the 2013 MAC regular season champions.

The Cardinals won the doubles point against the Bulls with wins at first and second doubles.  The Ball State twosome of Patrick Elliott and Andrew Stutz earned tied doubles at 1-1 after claiming an 8-5 win over Buffalo's Sebastian Ionescu and Akhil Mehta.  The deciding point came down to lone senior Austin Smith and his doubles partner Ray Leonard on the top court.  Smith and Leonard found themselves down at the start of the match but regained control beating Jonathan Hannestad and Sergio Arevalillo, 8-6 to claim the point for the Cardinals.

In singles, Ball State won all six first sets en route to winning five of the six matches. The true freshmen came through at the start of singles to put the Cardinals up 3-0 over the Bulls, Stutz with a win on court six and then Lucas Andersen followed with a straight set victory at the No. 3 position.  Smith would go out in style, as the lone senior claimed not only the doubles point but also match point after a 6-2, 7-5 defeat over Arevalillo on court four to give Ball State the victory.  Patrick Downs and Elliott were also winners on the day in their respective flights.

The No. 3 seed Ball State men's tennis team will take on the No. 2 seed Toledo, Friday morning at 10 a.m., in the MAC Tournament hosted by Ball State at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
