Women's Basketball Earns MAC Road Win At Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State women's basketball team won its third Mid-American Conference contest of the season with a 79-63 defeat at Ohio Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in league action, while Ohio dropped to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in MAC action.

In a game where the Cardinals shot 58.7 percent from the field and held its opponent to a 37.7 percent shooting mark, Ball State never let Ohio lead or tie the game.  The game marked Ball State’s best shooting percentage of the season including a 72.2 percent showing from behind the arc.

Four players managed to score in double figures with Nathalie Fontaine leading the way after a 20-point performance.  Jill Morrison ended the day with 19 points which included a 5-for-6 showing from the three point line.  Brandy Woody added 16 points and teammate Brittany Carter had 11.  Defensively the Cardinals out-rebounded the Bobcats 35 to 28. 

The Cardinals opened the game hitting 6-of-6 from the floor, which included four layups from Fontaine and two three pointers from Shelbie Justice.  Ball State shot 57.7 from the field in the first half alone, allowing the Cardinals to start the contest off with a 20-8 run with only seven minutes shaved off the clock.

Ball State led by as many as 17 (37-20) at the 5:07 mark in the first half.  Ohio would answer with a 9-0 run to come within nine (37-28) but back-to-back baskets from Shelby Merder and Carter gave the Cardinals the 42-28 halftime edge over the Bobcats.

Ball State took its first half momentum into the second half, as the Cardinals continued to shoot well from the field.  The Cardinals led by as many as 19 during the second half.  Despite efforts, the closest Ohio would get would be nine the entire game.

The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action at MAC West Division foe Toledo, Thursday at 7 p.m. in Savage Arena.  The Cardinals return home Sunday, Jan. 26 vs. Buffalo at 1 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
