WVB Opens MAC Tournament Play Friday Versus WMU

►THE WEEK AHEAD: The No. 3 seed Ball State women’s volleyball team opens play in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament Friday, when it battles No. 6 seed Western Michigan in the 7 p.m. quarterfinal match at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

►FOLLOW THE ACTION: Ball State Sports Link Radio WCRD 91.3 FM is slated to carry all of the Cardinals action in the 2013 MAC Tournament live over the airwaves and online at ... Rob Connett will handle the play-by-play duties for WCRD, while Drew Bogs and Andy Wright serve as color analysts ... In addition, live video and live stats will be available at the MAC Tournament Central link provided above.

►CARDINALS ALL-TIME: The Ball State women’s volleyball program enters the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament with an 826-526-2 (.611) all-time record ... BSU boasts an 87-37 (.702) mark under fourth-year head coach Steve Shondell, including a 45-19 (.703) record in league play.

►IN THE MAC: Ball State closed the 2013 league season with a 330-165 (.667) all-time record in MAC matches, which ranks second among all league schools ... Western Michigan is first with a 345-150 (.697) league mark.

►23 AND COUNTING: The Ball State women’s volleyball team will make its 23rd straight Mid-American Conference Tournament appearance this season and its 25th overall in the league’s premier event ... Ball State is 29-18 (.617) all-time in MAC Tournament matches, with both its 29 wins and 47 matches played being league records ... Overall, BSU is 4-1 in first round matches, 10-5 in quarterfinal matches, 9-9 in semifinal matches and 6-3 in championship matches.

►ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Since the inception of the MAC All-Tournament Team, Ball State has received more selections (25) than any other league school ... Miami is second on the list with 22, followed by Ohio at 20 ... Ball State placed at least one player on the MAC All-Tournament team every year from 1991-2005, marking a league-record 15-straight seasons with a honoree ... In addition, Ball State’s six tournament Most Valuable Player selections trail only Ohio’s seven.

►VERSUS THE FIELD: Ball State holds a 286-143-1 record versus the 2013 MAC Tournament field, including a 17-13 mark in tournament action and a 3-3 ledger in championship matches.

►BALL STATE VERSUS WESTERN MICHIGAN: With wins in both regular season meetings in 2013, the Cardinals trail the Broncos by just one match in the all-time series at 40-41 ... Ball State closed the 2013 regular season Nov. 16 with a 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 23-25, 25-17) victory at Western Michigan for its first road win in series since 2006 ... In the first match up this year, BSU snapped a three-match losing streak to WMU with a thrilling 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-14) victory at Worthen Arena Oct. 11 ... The teams have played just eight neutral site meetings in the series with each winning four ... The last time the two squads played on a neutral court was Oct. 9, 1982 with WMU scoring a 2-1 (15-7, 8-15, 15-4) victory.

►SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: Ball State enters the 2013 MAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed after posting a 12-4 record in league play and earning a share of the MAC West Division title ... Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Alex Fuelling paces the squad and ranks third in the MAC with a 3.70 kills-per-set average, while redshirt sophomore middle Hayley Benson ranks first in the conference with a .359 attack percentage ... Senior setter Jacqui Seidel and sophomore setter Jenna Spadafora have combined to set the Ball State offense to a .243 attacking mark which ranks second in the league ... In the backcourt, senior libero Catie Fredrich has tallied double-digit digs in 29 of BSU’s 31 matches this season for an average of 4.76 digs per set, which ranks fifth in the league ... As a team, the Ball State defense has held opponents to a combined .157 hitting mark which ranks first in the MAC.

►SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Western Michigan enters the 2013 MAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed with a 9-7 record in league action and a fourth-place finish in the MAC West Division ... Stephenee Yancy leads the WMU attack with a 3.39 kills-per-set average, but has not played in the last six matches ... Alysia Baznik leads WMU’s active players with a 2.49 kills-per-set average, while Rachel Sheffer and Claire Gerwig are right behind at 2.44 and 2.42, respectively ... Lexie Pawlik has set the Broncos offense to a .236 rate of success, which ranks WMU third in the MAC ... Lena Oliver paces the Western Michigan backcourt and is fourth in the league with a 4.85 digs-per-set average ... As a team, the WMU defense is limiting opponents to a .208 attack percentage which ranks eighth in the MAC.

►BSU VS. WMU IN 2013: The Ball State offense has connected for 17.00 kill per set and a .252 attack percentage in the two matches versus Western Michigan this season ... Senior middle Mindy Marx leads the squad with a 4.00 kills-per-set average in the two matches, while Hayley Benson is second at 3.88 ... Jacqui Seidel has dished out 13.67 assists pet set over the two matches, while also averaging 2.17 digs per set ... In the backcourt, Catie Fredrich has a 4.88 digs-per-set average in the season series ... Three Cardinals are averaging at least 1.00 blocks per set versus the Broncos, led by Benson at 1.38 ... Ball State has limited the Western Michigan offense to 12.38 kills per set and a .176 attack percentage this season.

►MAC HONORS: Ball State led the league with five student-athletes earning All-MAC honors as announced Thursday (Nov. 21) by the league office ... Representing the Cardinals on the All-MAC First Team are Mindy Marx, Hayley Benson and Alex Fuelling ... Earning All-MAC Second Team accolades for Ball State are Catie Fredrich and Jacqui Seidel.

►MORE ON THE MAC AWARDS: Ball State’s five All-MAC award winners in 2013 are the most for the Cardinals in the same season since 1996, when BSU also had five total selections, including two first team honorees and three honorable mentions ... The program record for All-MAC selections in a single season is six in 1994, which included two first team, two second team and two honorable mention honorees ... Ball State’s three All-MAC First Team award winners in 2013 ties as the second-most in program history with the 1993 and 2000 squads ... The Cardinals had a league-high and school-record four All-MAC First Team selections in 2011.

►FIRST TO 20: With its 3-1 victory over Miami (Oct. 26), Ball State became the first MAC program to reach the 20-win mark this season ... With a 24-7 overall record, Ball State’s .774 winning percentage is currently tied for 31st in the country ... In addition, BSU is one of only 16 NCAA Division I programs to record at least 24 wins this season … Since MAC play began in 1982, Ball State has posted 20-or-more regular season wins 17 times, which is second in the MAC to Western Michigan (19).

►SPEAKING OF FIRSTS: For her part in guiding Ball State to road wins at NIU and WMU last weekend, Jacqui Seidel was named the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week ... Seidel, who earned MAC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, helped the Cardinals secure a share of the MAC West Division title by guiding the offense to a combined .281 (123-43-285) attack percentage last week ... Over the two matches, Ball State averaged 17.57 kills per set, while Seidel averaged 15.43 assists per set.

►RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE: In setting Ball State to last Saturday’s win at Western Michigan, Jacqui Seidel dished out 63 assists which is a the most for a BSU setter in a four set match in the rally scoring era ... The previous record was 61 set by Angie Parrell versus Eastern Michigan Oct. 22, 2005 ... Seidel owns three of the top five assist marks for a four-set match in the rally scoring era.

►RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE PART 2: Jacqui Seidel’s 51 assists in the Cardinals to a 3-0 win over IUPUI (Sept. 17) were the most for a Ball State setter in a three-set contest in the rally scoring era ... The previous mark was 46 set by Brittany McGinnis versus Murray State Sept. 3, 2011 ... Seidel owns three of the top five assist marks for a three-set match in the rally scoring era.

►MORE ON SEIDEL: Jacqui Seidel enters the week ranked eighth in program history with 2,599 career assists ... Ball State’s active leader with 30 career assist/dig double-doubles, Seidel is also eighth in program history with a 7.88 career assists-per-set average.

►THE BALL STATE ATTACK: The Ball State offense enters the week ranked seventh in the nation with its 14.83 kills-per-set average ... Ball State’s 1,661 total kills, over 112 sets, are tops among all 328 NCAA Division I programs in the statistical rankings … Texas State is second in total kills with 1,660 over 127 sets ... The Cardinals also rank fourth nationally with a 13.95 assists-per-set average, while its .243 attack percentage is 58th.

►CARDINALS GO FOR 80 AGAINST TOLEDO: Ball State’s attackers combined for 80 total kills against Toledo (Nov. 7), marking the team’s best offensive showing since blasting a BSU rally scoring era record 95 kills versus Northern Illinois Nov. 19, 2004 ... The only other time Ball State’s attackers combined for 80-or-more total kills in a match during the rally scoring era was Oct. 1, 2004 versus Western Michigan.

►A PAIR OF HELPING HANDS: Senior setter Jacqui Seidel played a large role in the 80-kill performance versus Toledo (Not. 7), dishing out a career-best 64 assists ... The 64 assists tie as the second-most for a BSU setter in a five-set match the rally scoring era, trailing only Angie Parrell’s total of 69 at Akron Nov. 4, 2005.

►HITTING HER MARX: Over the past 25 matches, senior middle Mindy Marx has been one of Ball State’s top offensive players, leading the squad in attack percentage (.383) and ranking second in kills-per-set average (2.84) ... She has blasted double-digit kills in 13 of the last 20 matches, including a career-high 19 last Saturday at Western Michigan ... Marx, who had never connected for double-digit kills in back-to-back matches in her career prior to this season, has also logged 83 total blocks over the span.

►MORE ON MARX: Mindy Marx’s career-high .688 (12-1-16) attack percentage at Eastern Michigan (Sept. 27) is the second-best hitting mark in the MAC this season for a player recording at least 12 kills in a match ... In addition, Marx’s .677 (16-2-21) effort against SMU is tied as the fourth-best effort, giving Marx two of the top five hitting marks in the league this season.

►THE 20 KILL CLUB: With 21 kills versus Toledo (Nov. 7), Alex Fuelling became just the second player in program history to smash 20-or-more kills in a match at least three times in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present) ... Fuelling blasted a career-high 24 kills in Ball State’s win over IPFW (Sept. 4), while depositing 20 in the team’s four-set win at Iowa (Sept. 13) ... Kelsey Brandl (2009-11) accomplished the task five times over her career, including a BSU 25-point rally scoring era record 25 kills at Toledo (Oct. 7, 2010).

►15TH TO 1,000: With 11 digs in last Saturday’s win at Western Michigan, senior outside hitter Kylee Baker became just the 15th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career dig mark ... Baker enters the 2013 MAC Tournament ranked 15th in program history with 1,001 career digs ... Baker is also tied for 12th in the BSU record books with double-digit digs in 47 career matches.

►MORE ON BAKER: In addition to her strong defensive player, Kylee Baker enters the week ranked 17th in program history with 824 career kills, and is ninth in BSU’s record book with 2,721 career attack attempts.

►GOING FOR 2,000: With her 32 digs last week, Catie Fredrich upped her career total to 1,919 which is third in program history ... Fredrich could become just the third player in program history to reach 2,000 career digs with 81 more this season ... Fredrich, who has collected double-digit digs in 29 matches this season, is also second in program history in career matches with double-digit digs (100), fourth in career digs-per-set average (4.23) and fourth in career matches with 20-or-more digs (33).

►AMONG THE NATION’S LEADERS: According to the NCAA statistical archives, Catie Fredrich’s 1,919 career digs rank 21st among all active NCAA Division I players ... Western Michigan’s Lena Oliver is the NCAA’s active career leader with 2,491 career digs, while Bowling Green’s Ashley Dunn is 15th (1,986) and Buffalo’s Kelly Svoboda is 19th (1,935).

►BENSON LEADS THE LEAGUE: Hayley Benson enters the 2013 MAC Tournament as the league leader with a .359 (276-64-590) attack percentage this season ... Benson has hit above .350 in 15 of Ball State’s 31 matches this season, including a career-best mark of .667 (10-0-15) in the season-opening win over Austin Peay (Aug. 30).

►BENSON WITH THE BLOCK: Hayley Benson turned in a record-setting performance with a career-high 14 total blocks against SMU (Sept. 21) ... In helping Ball State post a season-high 17 total blocks in the four-set victory, Benson racked up career-highs of five solo blocks and nine block assists ... The 14 total blocks tie as the most for a Ball State player in the rally scoring era with Christine Kennedy’s effort versus IUPUI on Sept. 6, 2006.

►THREE FOR 20-OR-MORE: In the Oct. 19 win at Ohio, three Ball State players finished the match with 20-or-more digs for just the third time in the rally scoring era ... Alex Fuelling tallied a career-best 23 digs, while senior outside hitter Kylee Baker fell one shy of her career high with 22 ... Catie Fredrich rounded out the group with 21 digs ... The last time Ball State had three-or-more players collect 20-or-more digs in a match was Sept. 30, 2003, in a five-set win over IPFW; Stephanie Keller (30), Sarah Obras (24) and Kelly Cochran (20) ... On Sept. 13, 2003, four players tallied 20-or-more digs in a five set loss vs. Robert Morris; Cochran (39), Keller (36), Obras (22) and Stacie Baldwin (20).
